What People Are Saying
from Google"Toki Underground completely lives up to the hype. When you read this is the best Japanese food or the best ramen in DC, it’s not a marketing ploy. This place is truly off the charts. It’s very much a hidden gem: no sign outside, on the second floor, and only about 15 seats total. The space is tiny with all counter-style seating, elbow-to-elbow, which makes it perfect for singles or couples but definitely not ideal for groups. Food and drinks came out fast. Service was friendly and quick, though we did feel a little rushed despite not lingering. For example, we were never asked if we wanted a second drink, and the check was dropped without asking about dessert. A few missed upsell opportunities. Still, our server was warm and efficient overall. To drink, I ordered the Toki Monster, which was excellent. It’s made with peach-infused Japanese whiskey, peach oleo, Sichuan oil, and comes with a piece of smoked pork belly. For an appetizer, we shared the fried chicken steam buns and they were incredible. The chicken was perfectly crispy, and the combination of mayo, sweet chili sauce with a bit of heat, pickles, cilantro, and basil worked beautifully together. For my ramen, I ordered the Toki Classic, and it absolutely blew me away. The pork bone broth was rich and deeply flavorful, paired with pulled pork, scallions, kale, an onsen egg, pickled ginger, garlic, and chili oil. Every bite was incredible, and the portion was very generous. This is, without question, the best ramen I’ve ever had. It is the kind of dish you keep thinking about long after you leave. The food alone makes Toki Underground a must-visit. I’ll be craving that ramen for a long time, and I already can’t wait to go back."
"My girlfriend and I just had a delicious dinner here. We got the Brussels, curry ramen, and matcha tiramisu. The Brussels were good, but the ramen and tiramisu blew us away. Some of the best food I’ve had in a while! We got seated at the bar, and the bartender Daniel was super nice and even gave us a very informative political history lesson. My only concern is that the setup of the seating is unideal for groups bigger than two. But overall a great spot, and I hope to make it back again."
"I want to start by saying the food was fantastic! The Bao Buns, Curry Ramen, and Dan Dan Noodles were all packed with flavor and I would happily order again. This being said, the service was shockingly snarky and rude. The host wasn’t friendly at all. It’s really a shame, because the food was so great! Hopefully it was a one time experience, but it definitely was off putting."
"The steam bun with fried chicken and the root beer chicken wings are both delicious. The fried chicken curry ramen and the numbing garlic ramen are both okay. The pork insides the numbing garlic ramen is delicious tho. The vibe is great. There are not many seats, and there are also no tables, so it’s more suitable for single customers or couples vs. a 3+ people gathering. Overall, it’s a nice experience."
"Bad ramen, would never come back. Noodles are overcooked, the broth lacks depth. Unfortunate that the restaurant really went downhill. The service is absolutely terrifying. Ps - to the owner. Your restaurant is horrible. Probably the worst I’ve rated. Your hostess is rude, threatening customers to use resy, and the bartender? He angrily told an Asian family to stop touching the blinds, pure disrespect. Watch and listen to the in store video on 20 December. Come on. You probably made enough money, but pay some attention."
