What People Are Saying

"I'll preface this review by saying that I'm a young solo traveller looking to meet people and have fun. If you're looking for somewhere to stay for a few nights in a great location then this hostel is great. You have easy access to public transport and U street itself is charming and has great nightlife - which is why I was surprised that it wasn't a very social hostel. The majority of people I met were there for work. The shower facilities are great, with great water pressure and heat. The quieter atmosphere can be nice if you're looking to relax. My room had a balcony which was a nice surprise. I didn't use the cafe facilities but it seems like a nice bonus, especially for those looking to get some work done. As for the capsules themselves, I was initially impressed until I realised a lot of it is just set dressing. There are no plug outlets, only USB ports which didn't work properly and only charged items if I held the cable in place, leading me to charge my phone in the bathrooms or common areas. There were a few holes in my capsule, including a very large part of the front which made getting in and out a bit more awkward. It was also quite dirty underneath the mattress. Really confusing check in process - download an app, connect your passport to it, then you get sent the door codes before you can even get into the building? I'm aware there are limited front desk hours but surely it makes sense to ensure someone is available to check you in and tell you where everything is."

"I just returned from my 5th year staying at the U Street Hostel with usually around 30 high school seniors and am really grateful that there is a clean, safe, fun, and accommodating hostel for us to stay in so close to everything we wanted to do and see in DC. The kids love the pods, and it is a great bonding experience for them to stay in the rooms together. It's truly the nicest hostel I've stayed in, and the staff is super accommodating and kind, patient with the teenagers and responsive to any requests and questions I have. The Brew on U coffee is also SO good! Thank you, U Street Hostel, we'll be back!"

"Good hostel in a busy night life location. Hostel can use some upgrades. It comes with towels and have a cafe on the 1st floor. Lots of minor issues. Maybe j just had a defective capsule. -Self checking was nice and easy. -Front door entrance handle is out of place. -Only 1 bathroom on the 2nd floor which is always in use. 3rd floor has 3 bathrooms with one out of service. Basement has 1 bathroom which is also always busy but mens shower room has urinals with one out of service. Bathroom seems clean -USB-A ports in the capsule(I only carry USB-C cables). Ended up buying one form Walgreens down the block and it charges for several mins before phone detects a disconnect/reconnect. Ended up returning cable and just using wall outlets outside the room -capsule fan was making loud clicking nose. Turn out it was hitting plastic on top of the capsule. I was able to fix this myself. Fans were dusty and airflow was weak. -capsule portable light doesn't work but the mirror light and blue light works. -the entrance of my capsule has duct tape on it. Somebody heavy must have broken it entering the capsule. -Curtain for my capsule only goes up half way. Have to manually roll it up. -none of the Boston outside the capsule work.think they are just for show."

"Great location, helpful staff and an easy vibe about it. Only complaint was the showers I wish they were door cubicles instead of curtains and they need more hooks. Some people are inconsiderate and left doors open and were loud. Staff were good very helpful and easy to talk to. Guy at the cafe is lovely. Tip with the showers: they have plastic benches under the sink i used that as an extra shelf for my toiletries while i shower and it also holds to curtain in if you nudge it against the cubical wall. Definitely check out rush bowl just around the corner. say an Australian wrote a review and now you have to try it :)"

"Stayed here one night and had a great experience overall. Tom made the check in process smooth and welcoming. Explained the details of how to use Goki app and using that to get in and out of the building and own room. I enjoyed the private room and it was spacious for my own self and have your own shower and rest room. Not far is the metro and quite conveniently in a great neighborhood. Would come again and recommend to friends."
