What People Are Saying
from Google & Yelp"My wife and I just visited here again last night, and I feel remiss about never having shared a review. We've eaten many meals cooked by Chef Baruthio, and he has never once disappointed us. We enjoyed his prior restaurant (Baru 66) when it was still around, and we’re delighted that he’s back in town with his new concept - Café Madeleine. Like other reviews mention, the setting is small and intimate, and the service is warm and personable. The carefully curated seasonal menus are creative and delicious. Each course is well presented and includes a detailed description from the chef himself. We recommend including the suggested wine pairings, which further elevates the experience. The Café’s sommelier does a great job finding wines that harmonize well with each course, and you will likely be enjoying selections that aren’t commonly available locally. In short, if you’re looking for a special dining experience and you appreciate great food, you should give this restaurant a try. Des Moines has several excellent high-end restaurants, and we’ve been fortunate enough to visit each of them, but in our opinion, you won’t do better right now than Café Madeleine."
"We had the privilege of experiencing chef’s Tour de France Dinner with wine pairings. All the foods were thoughtfully put together in terms of flavor, texture, and presentation. The experience was intimate with the chef personally explaining each dish and serving it. If you want a cozy, lovely, and delicious dinner I highly recommend Cafe Madeline. The Sommelier was also wonderful explaining where each wine was from and why it was selected for the pairing"
"Very unique and special experience in Des Moines. The venue is small and comfortable - the staff is great and attentive. The chef’s creations are imaginative and delicious. Add the personable touch that the chef comes to your table as each course is delivered to describe the creations. Memorable and enjoyable experience from start to finish."
"Great dining experience! Each of the 8 courses were delicious and the presentation was beautiful. Most courses were served & described by the chef himself so you could inquire as desired."
"I was previously unaware of the magical portal that lies at the corner of 6th and Walnut. Upon arrival, you step out of Des Moines and into a cozy world created by Chef David Baruthio. Tile floor, soft lighting, a handful of intimate tables, a warm welcome and a tasting menu that transitions with the seasons. The evening of our visit we enjoyed "A Journey Through France". Exceptional food, unpretentious but polished service and thoughtful wine pairings create a dining experience unique to the Des Moines food scene."
"Food, service, and wine pairing were all exceptional, and having the brilliant Chef Baruthio explain every dish is a very special touch. It certainly is..."
