What People Are Saying
from Google"The definition of old school cool! This place is straight out of Little Italy in 1960 but thankfully without all the smoking. The food portions are huge (just like your Italian grandmother insists), it taste great but is unpretentious, and all a great value. I always insist to stop whenever we are driving through Dubuque and recommend the same for everyone else!"
"It Is ALWAYS a wonderful experience at Marios. It's a popular place so you may need reservations if you dont want to wait. Most are willing to go and wait as the food is fresh, home made and delicious! Very busy staff but they are always pleasant and friendly. Love this place!!"
"I hadn’t been to Mario’s for quite some time, it’s a back home staple and was always one of my favorite places to go. However this past weekend when visiting I was actually rather disappointed. We were seated rather quickly by the host who was a very nice young man, who sat us in the back room. Unfortunately we were by the window and it was so cold my daughter kept her coat on all through dinner. At one time a waitress opened the back door and let in a blast of cold air causing everyone to gasp, then she asked, “Is anyone warm back here?” To which everyone responded with a quick “NO”. When said waitress came to take our order, she actually sat down on a chair at the table next to us to take it. Seemed weird, but ok. However this table was later moved even closer to our table to make for room for 2 other parties. Now mind you the waitress took our order while sitting at this table so it was already close, so to move it even closer felt intrusive. Our starters came out rather quickly, but the first thing I noticed, the pizza bread that came with our Sicilian salad had changed. When, I don’t know, but the bread used to be a crispy thin crust with the oil, pepper and minced garlic on it, now it’s more of a focaccia bread, but was absolutely flavorless. The Sicilian salad itself was even a disappointment. Same ingredients, but the salad dressing tasted so much of vinegar and pepper and not the robust flavor it used to have, I couldn’t eat it. Believe me, I loved this salad and pizza bread so much I’ve replicated it over the years since having moved away, so I definitely remember this salad and its bread. I was worried I’d be disappointed in the dish I ordered, their well known panzerotti and its sauce (wow that sauce), but I wasn’t! It was still as amazing as I remembered! It’s just disappointing when you remember these wonderful foods and when they’re switched up, it’s just not the same. You often hear of restaurants losing quality once the owner passes and I truly believe Mario was the glue of his restaurant. Matter of fact the last time I had been to the restaurant Mario was still there, still smiling, and came to our table and talked to my husband and I and our kids…just how he was. Definitely not the same."
"We tried Mario's Italian Restaurant for the first time this week. It is a old school neighborhood feel, with the most delicious Italian food. I had the Veal Cutlet Parmigiana with spaghetti. The veal was very tender and in delicious sauce. My wife ordered the Mario Panzerotti, which was plentiful and also very delicious!! Highly recommend giving it a try next time you're in Dubuque."
"Fantastic!! The pizza bread is sinfully delicious! If we ever get back here, we will be eating here again. It looks a bit iffy on the outside, but it is quaint and clean on the inside. We loved it! Some people said the marinara sauce was too watery, but it had a lot of flavor. I usually skip over it because it is too sweet like lots of sugar has been added, but this I ate and liked! This restaurant is HIGHLY recommended! They gave us excellent service as well, they got very busy while we were deciding what to order, but it was no problem."
