What People Are Saying
from Google & Yelp"We went for a late lunch. I had the 'Toad Stool' sandwich and it was amazing. A grilled Portobello mushroom sandwich on a toasted hoagie roll. My friend had a cup of the pulled pork green chili and a salad. the green chili and it was as good as I've had deep in the heart of Texas.....well actually on the Texas border. I tend to judge places by the countenance and attitude of the employees. And everyone working here seem to be happy and a having a good playful time. The single waitress was taken care of multiple tables at once and was doing a great job without getting stressed. Background music was vintage 80s pop. I felt like it didn't really match the vibe of the place but maybe it was just to appeal to the broadest group of patrons. This is a great little place to eat in Iowa City. Don't sleep on the bluebird.....it's a Homespun small town restaurant merged with a modern college vibe along with some interesting diner style food. I just wish they had more vegetarian options. Price was extremely reasonable for the quality and quantity."
"We were just driving through town and decided to stop in—and we’re so glad we did! This has become one of our favorite spots for breakfast and lunch whenever we’re passing through. The service was quick and friendly, and we were happy to get a seat right away. My husband had an omelette and I had the mushroom sandwich—both were absolutely delicious! Everything was fresh, flavorful, and made with care. It’s one of those places you just look forward to coming back to. Highly recommend if you’re in the area!"
"Mr Bluebird Egg sandwich might be one of the best breakfast sandwiches I’ve had. My son had the pancakes which were also very good as I snuck some bites of those too. Service was great, although the floor was a little dirty with food and some debris. Also quite a few flies, but it is a diner with doors constantly open. Enough to mention but not enough to take away a full star. We sat inside, but there are some outdoor tables as well. On weekends it can be busy if you don’t get there early enough…if you are a late breakfast person, be prepared to wait 30 minutes up to an hour if it is a busy weekend in Iowa City."
"Always a morning favorite! Usually always order an omelet and the Prairie Breeze cheese is a personal favorite! Love locally sourced products. Today I tried the Breggfast Sammy. So good and would get again. I also chose the rustic hash and so glad I did. My daughter got the classic chocolate chip pancakes! We enjoyed the beautiful Iowa morning and sat outside. Thank you Bluebird for always providing delicious food and great friendly service."
"The food is amazing! The corn beef hash is homemade, well seasoned and tender. The French toast is so good... and there are several different topping options. The biscuits and gravy was recommended and did not disappoint. Staff was friendly, kind and knowledgeable. Definitely will return."
"This morning marked my third visit to The Dandy Lion. From my experience, many restaurants can be good once. Being consistent is what differentiates good..."
