What People Are Saying

"The family and I found ourselves spending a little time in Iowa City for a weekend. Never had we thought that we needed to stop somewhere in Iowa City to get a bite to eat. That is, before we stumbled into this restaurant. This restaurant is a little hole in the wall that was pleasantly surprising. What’s that saying? Great things come in small packages? The saying holds true tenfold in this situation. Our family will be stopping by here again. Being unfamiliar with the items on the menu, my family and I had several questions. The cashier was extremely polite and even more helpful. It may have been the owner, because the cashier was also helping cook the food as well, but don’t quote me on it. The bathrooms are clean and well-maintained. I will say there were a few spots that could be redone regarding cracks in the walls, tilting tables, and small things, but nothing that takes away from the experience. Speaking of food, the portions are plentiful, and the flavors are fantastic. The prices for combos are very fair for the amount of food, something that’s not always guaranteed these days. So I’m always happy to see that! I ordered the Philly Gyro. What can I say? The meat was soft and tender. The toppings provided a great contrast between sweet and spicy, and the pita bread was soft and fresh. I ordered the sauces on the side because I think it’s good to try flavors separately and together. The sauces are definitely a great addition to the food — both the gyros and the fries. The chicken gyro was basically the same, just with chicken. Again, the portion sizes are generous, so come hungry! Definitely take a shot on this restaurant gem."

"I recommend Zolly’s Grill. I ordered the spicy gyro chicken sandwich with added onion and Swiss cheese, plus a side of spicy popcorn chicken chunks—both were absolutely delicious and packed with flavor. The atmosphere leans more toward takeout. There is seating available, but several booths are ripped and the interior feels a bit run down. Service was decent overall. I came in late with about an hour left before closing, and the owner or staff member was seated at a table, but he got up almost immediately, took my order, and the food came out fast. My only real hesitation about returning would be the price, but the food quality itself was solid."

"I was in town with a couple of friends and we found this place through a Google search. It was easy to find a d with a parking garage close by, very simple to park and walk to. The place is small and gives off a "greasy diner" vibe but don't let that scare you. The workers are extremely nice and eager to help you. There wasn't a line or a wait when we went so the staff were quick to greet us and take our order. They answered our questions and after we were done eating asked how everything was. They serve some interesting options here, mostly burgers, gyros, and other handheld options with some fries. I got a gyro cheeseburger and it was very good. The combination sounded interesting enough for me to try and I am glad I did. The burger comes with a load of toppings and the portion was big. I made my a meal, which comes with fries and a drink for around $17 a deal in my book since I walked away full. My friends got a double cheeseburger and a Philly steak sandwich. Both were just as good and delicious as mine. This is a MUST try in my book, which I will be doing the next time I'm back in town."

"Great food at affordable prices. I don’t typically post about food but always love supporting local businesses. This was my third time eating at Zolly’s Grill and once again it was excellent. They cook it to order so your foods always fresh and hot! Huge portions at reasonable rates. Recommend the Steak Philly and onion rings!"

"Stumbled across this gem today while searching for something different than the standard franchised stuff. After reading and seeing some reviews, we figured we’d give it a shot. I’m so glad we did. The food was fantastic! I am NOT a fan of crinkle cut fries- they’re just not good to me. BUT! This place had me taking home the rest of my large portion of fires to finish. They are crispy and done perfectly. I ordered a gyro (no onions or jalapeños) and it was delicious. I tend to make my own because it’s hard to find good ones but this place HAS the good ones! It was big and made well. My husband had the Italian beef with hot gardiniara peppers and was pleasantly surprised that it was good, also another hard to find made right food. I also ordered 2 pepperoni pizza puffs to go for my son, who dug in and said it was really good- he’s hard to impress ;) Needless to say, it was a great experience, the food was delicious and the prices were very reasonable for the size of the meals. The service was excellent as well! We will be back, so glad to find a place so close to home!"
