"Finally some good coffee in Boston! Jokes aside, I’m im not sure if my harsh judgement of the Boston coffee scene comes from an outsiders honest opinion of the Dunkin Dependency or ignorance of the gems the city has to offer. Either way Little Wolf is a new favorite in Boston and a must visit for aficionados. I went twice, and on my first visit I got the Little Wolf and a drip of their banko gotiti. My wife got the s'mores latte. The little wolf is a small, cortado-esque specialty espresso drink that has house made smoked maple syrup and oleo saccharum (orange peel essence syrup) and dusted with their “wolf dust” (combination of cinnamon, peppercorn, and smoked salt). I expected to like it but had reservations about even ordering it due to a feeling that the orangey drink would be out of place on a dreary and cold November morning. My wife insisted, informing me that folks online said it was the cat’s pajamas. I’m so glad we ordered it. The smoked maple syrup and oleo saccharum made a beautiful combination that harkened to a rich and cozy profile reminiscent of the orange whiff you get off of a particularly pungent Douglas Fir and reminded me that clementines are in fact a winter citrus and should be given their due respect. The banko gotiti caught my eye because I absolutely adored a roast done by my favorite local shop from the same co-op and was selfishly interested in expanding my profile by adding another data point to the Jackson pollock that I clam for a palette. Additionally I noticed they brewed their drip coffee with an XBloom which further piqued my interest. I didn’t realize their banko gotiti was actually a pineapple co-ferment. In hindsight I’m glad I didn’t since I tend to steer away from coferments (I’ve been hurt before). It was not super funky, comparable to your run of the mill natural process. The pineapple note was load bearing, but not overwhelming. In fact I mistook it for a sweet but zippy lychee on first pass. An impressive extraction on the XBloom, and a step towards rebuilding my relationship with coferments. I also harshly pre-judged the s’mores latte. It was not the sugary concoction I was expecting, rather a beautiful balancing act of a rich coco aroma with chocolate and graham cracker on the palate. Second time back I ordered the little wolf again (guilty), but we also branched out and got the pumpkin spice latte. Their PSL is one of the best renditions I’ve had of the icon, and the barista recommended getting it with some wolf dust on it next time (shoutout Kevin, you genius). Might be worth its own trip to Boston if you ask me. I also got a drip of a Colombian bean by Sebastian Ramirez. It was delicate and clean with big stone fruit on the palette and some tea notes in the aroma, and reminded me of a coffee I had almost a decade ago.
