What People Are Saying
from Google & Yelp"This has been my go to place for 10+ years for meeting with friends, university folks, business colleagues, and more. Plus, we've taken our kids here dozens of times. The ambience is chill, and it's super easy to have any kind of conversation without your neighboring table overhear everything you're saying. :) The salad and deli options are healthy, fresh, and affordable. The grits with beans, salsa, cheese, and runny eggs is filling and delicious. The coffee is warm and plentiful. And the outdoor seating is a nice option blissful spring and fall days in Chapel Hill. Highly recommended!"
"Ordered a Bahn Mi and requested it to be in a wrap rather than on ciabatta- they were able to substitute the wrap but for some reason did not toss the tofu in any sauce, which made the wrap incredibly dry and flavorless (It did have the sriracha cilantro mayo, but that was pretty flavorless). Also not sure why more than half the wrap was just plan cabbage mix? The beet salad was awesome and saved my lunch today - will be back for that. Hoping for a better experience in the future."
"I ate breakfast here every day during a visit: *Outstanding* food + price + service + ambience Also, great plant-based options. And tons of parking right in front of the restaurant. I was in Chapel Hill for a conference. The Root Cellar happened to be very close to where I was staying. I ended up eating a delicious and filling breakfast here everyday rather than the boring continental breakfast offered by our conference.. The breakfasts and smoothies were really delicious and filling - all at an incredibly reasonable price. The manager and staff went out of their way to make sure that my special orders were done right. And all of them, to a person, were present, kind, and helpful. Finally, the ambience is perfect - indoors and outdoors - for a simple, quaint, homey restaurant. This place embodies the classic, small-town restaurant that takes care of its customers in every way."
"A slightly elevated breakfast experience with generous portions and a fun communal atmosphere. I had a borracho bowl, which consisted of crispy tater tots, a generous portion of scrambled eggs, guacamole, cheesy sauce, and sautéed peppers. It was very filling and good. My wife got an eggs Benedict, which consisted of two poached eggs on top of two fried green tomatoes, on top of a big piece of toast slathered in pimento cheese. It was tasty and a step above your typical eggs Benedict."
"Good coffee, solid food, options, and an absolutely lovely cinnamon roll! Cinnamon roll is one of the top five I’ve ever had, and that’s with a glazed icing instead of cream cheese, which says a lot. I’ll be honest, every time I come to root cellar, I like it a little bit more But I do think they have some room to work on more basic coffee drinks like a flat white or Cortado, the ones I’ve had have been too big."
