About The German Cafe

Casual, brick-walled standby for German fare & housemade desserts in an 1860s cotton warehouse.

What People Are Saying

"Stopped in for lunch at The German Café and really enjoyed it. I had the Reuben sandwich with German potato salad and an imported Celebrator Doppelbock—everything was excellent. The Reuben was flavorful, the potato salad had that perfect tang, and the beer paired great with the meal. Finished with an apple strudel that was warm and delicious. My only wish is that the menu had a few more options to choose from. Overall, a cozy spot with friendly service and great food."

"We just happen upon this place. It was a wonderful surprise. Hands-down, the best potato pancakes ever and the homemade Napoleon was dynamite! The purple cabbage and cucumber salad are not to be overlooked."

"The German Cafe is located in the historical Cotton Exchange Building. The atmosphere is relaxed and calm. Quiet lighting, interesting German decor. The restaurant under new ownership was established in 1976. A nice menu and excellent food. We enjoyed every mouthful."

"I visited this location for a work lunch, great spot to eat with friends, family, and cohorts. A little bit on the darker side in terms of lighting only. The rest of the cafe is great. The staff members were very kind and attentive. It was my first time eating German cuisine so I have no point of reference; the kraut may just not be my thing but it was edible for sure. The German potato salad was a bit bland, but again, it was my first time having it. The pork schnitzel was amazing though. I highly recommend that. The menu you get inside is a bit limited versus the menu that’s posted on a wall outside that displays all the menus for restaurants in the cotton exchange. For what it’s worth, everything available did sound interesting and I would love to return and try them out. The Reubens my colleagues got looked very delicious."

"Stopped by The German Café Wilmington and tried the Schnitzel Sandwich. The schnitzel itself was a bit too thin for my taste, and the bread—advertised as rye sourdough—felt more like regular toast. The German potato salad was decent but served warm, which for me as a northern German is the “wrong” kind—it was clearly the Bavarian/Franconian version. Overall, probably a nice spot for locals wanting a taste of something different, but for a German tongue it’s a bit of a let-down."
