What People Are Saying
from Google"This place is amazing. I did see the review about the minimum credit card charges, but this is a family business and those charges add up. The food is great. The owner is amazing. Can’t ask for a better neighborhood bagel shop."
"The lower rating is for three reasons: the unfriendly nature of the couple who are owners, and the credit card policy. They already charge extra for credit card vs. cash, then why have a minimum. The reason they are charging extra is to cover the transaction fees they have to pay as a business. Then why a ridiculous policy on minimum amount for credit card. They have listed prices per bagel and I ordered baker's dozen expecting a price listed on the menu. But they charged extra because I had "speciality" bagel as part of my order. The bagel were fresh, good sized, and had variety. The employee was friendly. I would visit again because the bagels were good."
"Food was fine. Service definitely could have been better. Server moved slow, got my order wrong, which I could understand as I asked for a bagel with cream cheese and a side of has browns, but she put the hash brown in the bagel. When I asked her where my hash brown wasz she just said it's in the bagel. I said that I had wanted it on the side and she just said sorry that's not what you said., didn't even offer to correct it. What kind of customer service is that?. Will not be visiting again."
"I visited What A Bagel Cafe in White Plains, NY to purchase a bagel. My total came to $4.95, and I attempted to pay with my debit card. The owner pointed to a handmade sign posted by the register that read: • “Credit card minimum $15” • “Debit card minimum $10” He informed me I could not use my card unless I either spent more money or paid in cash. Reluctantly, I purchased two orange juices I did not want, raising my total to $13, just to be able to pay. For clarity: • Under federal law, merchants may set a credit card minimum purchase, but it cannot exceed $10. • For debit cards, no minimum purchase is permitted at all. This store’s policies are therefore illegal and in violation of Visa/Mastercard rules. After paying, I politely told the owner: “This is ridiculous, I know your processing fees are not $5 per transaction.” Instead of addressing my concern, he responded by telling me to “shut up” in front of two other customers. I asked, “That is how you’re going to talk to your customers?” His reply again was: “Shut up.” At that point, I stated I would not be returning and left the establishment. This experience was both unfair and humiliating: 1. The cafe is enforcing illegal debit/credit minimums that force customers to overspend or use cash. 2. The owner’s unprofessional conduct, telling a paying customer to “shut up” repeatedly, is unacceptable for any business. I am filing this complaint with the Better Business Bureau and sharing my experience publicly so other consumers are aware. I will also be reporting this violation to Visa/Mastercard, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and the New York Attorney General’s office. No customer should be forced into illegal payment practices or treated with such disrespect."
"I’m pregnant and ran in here for a quick bagel because I was starving. I’m not familiar with the place and when I ordered I did not know there was a credit card minimum. I ordered a bagel, and was trying to pay with my card when they said I couldn’t get my bagel because of the minimum. I told them politely I’m so sorry I just don’t have cash, I didn’t know there was a minimum for cards. The owner was just cold, rude and mean, looked at me and walked away. I understand credit card fees can be high, so happy for them to charge me a service fee like most other places do. But to just flat out not let me know beforehand, after my bagel was already made and so clearly cannot be sold to anyone else, and then just look me up and down say “nope” and walk away. It was clearly an honest mistake.. As a small business owner, aren’t you in the people business?"
