What People Are Saying
from Google"Recently visited Pittsburgh and was in the mood for some Mexican food! From the entrance the environment was very inviting and the waitress was friendly. After being seated we were greeted quickly, we ordered some fun drinks highly recommended the Blood Orange Margarita! Following the good drinks the chips and queso were fresh and filling. After getting our entrees I ordered the enchiladas verdes which was so delicious and my friend ordered the chicken chimichanga. We were very happy with our night out decision for Mexican and decided we were going back the next night. Both nights were equally as good. Will definitely be returning when back in Pittsburgh :)"
"Love Tocayo! Amazing atmosphere for sitting in and extremely fast service for take out! Never have any issues with the food and the staff is nice and helpful. Lots of vegetarian options and the food is SO good. The cocktails are banger, especially the Mojitos. They also have lots of margarita options, including a frozen margarita, and also have sangria. Great for a date night and a nice spot to take out-of-town visitors to Pgh. It's always a great experience! Only downside is it can be a bit on the loud side and busy (may have to wait for a spot), but that is because it is so popular! It is worth the wait and usually not bad. The kitchen is open late (later than most other places on Walnut St), which is great for a late-night bite, and if you go at non-peak hours or late into the evening, it's a cozy and quiet experience."
"Tocayo-Shadyside has excellent food. Delicious, perfectly crafted cocktails. I had the Jamaica Margarita and my Mom had a frozen Mango Marg. The guacamole is one of the best in the city. I was expected to be charged more for it, since the menu listed it's cost as "market price". But I believe it came to $14 for an appetizer portion fit for two. For my entree I tried the mix and match tacos. I had the fish taco, which was insanely good. And I tried a chicken chorizo taco, which was very good. These came with a very flavorful and nicely portioned side salad. My Mom tried the shrimp taco and she raved about how good it was. Service was nice enough. As far as atmosphere goes. Tocayo is beautifully decorated with vibrant, colorful and cheerful decor. But the overall vibe from staff and other patrons was the opposite of cheerful, warm and vibrant. It was sterile and muted. That was kind of a drag. Maybe they didn't particularly like that my eight year old son was with me? He's very well behaved and quite frankly, the life of the party anywhere we go. Maybe they could take a nod from him and loosen up and crack a smile once in awhile. I would give them another try. But if I get the feeling my kid is unwelcome again, then I'll never go here again."
"My meal consisted of chips and salsa, a blood orange margarita, 2 tacos (chicken and chorizo, and steak), the white bean chili, and an espresso lava cake. Solid food all around. The green tomatillo is a must, and the white bean chili was a stand out as well. The tacos were great, the margaritas were tasty, and the dessert hit the spot. Consistently served great food here. I paid $80+ for 2 adult meals with margaritas, 1 dessert, 1 taco for a child with a horchata drink, and chips and salsa. Overall, a 4.5 out of 5."
