from Google"I read some other reviews to make sure it wasn't just me. I've been to restaurants before where you order at the front and then go find a seat and they bring your food to you (Vic & Al's and Loro do it really well). I feel like this restaurant needs to work on their system a little. Staff didn't seem to adhere to this concept and we were able to have servers come to us to take our order so why do we need to order at the front too? Also, if we have to go to the front to order, please provide a place for us to gather plates, utensils, napkins. Due to this, it just felt like service was lacking, until the end, when our third server went the extra mile and put a candle on our dessert for our friend's birthday. There were bussers who didn't have the ability to place orders but instead took our plates and drinks away and grabbed the server when we needed them. We sat outside, which is a lovely space. There is a mix of comfy chairs and large tables for seating for 8 or 4. Inside seating looks more limited and for smaller groups with wooden tables and chairs as décor. Outside seating looks more cozy and is the better option weather pending. As for food and drinks we ordered off of the happy hour menu. Drinks are good, especially the pina pagana. The snacks were good and I recommend everything. We loved the churros! We also ordered the filled churros with dulce de leche and raspberry cream which was also good. Parking is super limited and a little stressful since it's right off of Lamar, so try street parking."
"After loving the original San Gines in Madrid, we just had to try this branch in Austin! We were told there's another branch in Miami & happy to know that one will open in Manila, Philippines next month (exactly where we will be visiting). Glad they also serve breakfast fare & tapas. The gambas was perfectly cooked with a generous amount of garlic. The croquetas de jamon was very tasty & similar to the ones we ate in Spain. The star of the show is easily their churros & Spanish hot chocolate. This was why we came here in the first place. We always liked the size & texture of their churros & the thickness & richness of the hot chocolate. Service was very prompt & courteous. We were told that they serve freshly cooked paella at the patio every Thursday evening. We will be back for that soon!"
"Because their churros are very good, I have eaten them a few times, so this time I came to try their tapas (thought not many people left reviews for savory). The octopus was quite good, crispy and flavorful. The garlic shrimp oil was not very fragrant, but the shrimp themselves were tasty. Overall, everything was decent, but the tapas portions are too expensive for what you get. I would not recommend this place for dinner, but the churros are freshly fried and really delicious."
"Visited San Ginés in the evening and had a lovely experience. I ordered their churros with hot chocolate, which were good and comforting — I’d rate them 4/5. The chocolate was rich and paired well with the churros. What really stood out was the location and vibe of the place — absolutely beautiful and lively, easily a 5/5. The atmosphere makes it a great spot to relax, hang out, and enjoy a classic dessert experience. Overall, a wonderful place to visit, especially for the ambience and setting. Definitely worth stopping by if you’re in the area. Must-try: Churros with Hot Chocolate"
"I am beyond thrilled San Ginés has come to Austin! I’ve loved the original location in Madrid for 25 years and have longed for them to come to the US. The South Lamar location is the wish come true. Coming south, we had a little trouble spotting it and ended up having to make the block to get to their parking. When you enter the bright white building, you order at the counter and choose a table either inside or out on their lovely expansive porch. I liked being able to leave a tab open. We came at lunch and ordered Dos Huevos, eggs with chorizo, bacon, seasoned potatoes, and sourdough toast. It was like boring American breakfast on steroids. Yum. We followed that with the main attractions: ¡churros y chocolate! The churros with chocolate dipping sauce are just like those in Spain, just crunchy enough on the outside to be tender and perfectly chewy on the inside. There are a couple of options, but we got ours with the traditional cinnamon sugar. And the hot chocolate is the fabulous thick yet drinkable silky smooth elixir you can find in Europe but rarely in the USA. Perfection in a cup, the chocolate, and perfection on a plate, the churros. We sat on the patio, and the lunchtime crowd included business types, moms with tots, and neighborhood folks who had clearly found their happy place. The happy hour (3-6, M-F) is a great deal, and I imagine it’s popular then too. The cocktail, wine, and craft beer selection is excellent. We will be back again and again!"
