What People Are Saying

from Google & Yelp

"Went on a weekend morning and, as expected, it was busy. This location is huge with plenty of tables inside and a few outside with heaters. It definitely helps to have a reservation. For food, we got the French toast, which gives you access to their famous berry bar. I got the eggs Benedict and it was great. Service was pretty quick and attentive considering how packed it was. Parking is limited since you’re in downtown, so keep that in mind."

"**Ridiculous $9 split charge, 2.97% credit card fee, and a very rude, condescending manager.** Came here with a large group while visiting Seattle. My partner and I were too full from the previous night's dinner, so we decided to share the "Rancher's Breakfast", since we wanted a sweet and savory dish (we also ordered a side of tofu). Our food comes out and the french toast is on a small 6x6 plate, so there already wasn't much room to add fruits from the berry bar, which you can only go to once. My friends ordered the french toast plates, which were much larger (appeared to be 12x12) and were able to grab a lot more berries than my 6x6 plate could hold. We get our bill ($197 but $260.86 after the included 20% gratuity and taxes) and are surprised to see I got charged a $9 split charge for sharing my small 6x6 french toast plate with my boyfriend. We complain to our very kind waiter and ask if it could be removed because we also ordered a $5 side of tofu and the rest of my table ordered multiple large dishes, sides, and drinks. The manager comes over and tells us she can't remove the $9 split fee because the menu specifies the split charge under the "Berry Bar" food section (in the TINIEST font ever), which I did not look at nor see while browsing the menu because I was only focused on the Rancher's Breakfast, which was under the "Eggs" section (see photo attached). In addition, she said the berry bar specifically has a sign on the clear hood that reiterates the split fee and condescendingly asked if we wanted her to show us (mind you, I went to the berry bar to just grab some fruits, not look out for a tiny sign mentioning a split fee). She also said in a very patronizing tone that if she were to waive our $9 fee, the restaurant would be out of business because "you should know that organic berries are very expensive in this economy." We even tried explaining to her that we shared berries on our small 6x6 french toast plate (which was part of our Rancher's Breakfast order), and that the split fee would've been understandable had we ordered an actual French Toast plate that was 12x12 and could fit more berries, but she continued being dismissive and defensive. Our waiter later returned and was apologetic for not explaining the berry bar and split fee for us. I have never encountered a restaurant so greedy by charging a $9 split fee and 2.97% credit card fee, and I'm from LA. Portage Bay seems to really need the $9 to survive, so we ended up paying it."

"Service was prompt and friendly. Waiter recommended a seasonal Benedict. Interesting flavors with a little spice. The English muffin was a little tough but the taste made up for it. The cheddar biscuit was delicious! A side of sausage gravy went with and I could have eaten it like soup. Yummy! One of us is gluten free so the lemon ricotta pans were a perfect choice. The restaurant is a little loud that’s why 4 stars on ambiance."

"Good location, and atmosphere. Make sure to reserve table in advance for weekends. This place has decent options for vegetarian/vegan food. I ordered Vegan banana pancakes. I liked the fruit bar with all options for toppings like fruits, cream, and nuts, but pancakes were little undercooked and doughy. I had been to this location before and have tried their dish The Farmers Daughter and remember it being good. Might give this cafe another try."

"Cool Cool spot! Portage Bay brings it to you fresh from the garden, fresh from the farm. We had the cleanest, freshest eggs and vegetables ever 😋 Know that you take your plate up to the fruit bar to add to your Pumpkin and all other Pancakes, French Toast or just to put on your plate. Great atmosphere. Great service."
