What People Are Saying

"My usual coffee stop was closed due to a flood, so I took a walk on S 5th Street and discovered Green Baked Goods or GBG. Located in Arts@Large a block off the Mineral St exit from I-94 in the historic 5th Ward of Milwaukee, the cafe is operated by Kevin, a baker par excellence, who greeted me with a warm and hospitable smile and an attentive eagerness long lost at retail eateries these days. I ordered a large vanilla latte and while Kevin prepped the bold and tastey 4-shot steamer, my eye spied several fresh loafs on the counter - lemon, pistacchio, and nutty banana flavors. I added the pistash to my order to take home. It was $7 for my 20 oz and five more for the loaf - and I added a modest tip to show my gratitude. Then my phone rang and I took a seat at one of the nostalgic tables in the 19th century space. As I listened to the caller, my fingers mindlessly unwrapped the loaf which was soft and aromatic. What a surprise compared to the ultra-firmer texture of day-old cakes and muffins sold elsewhere for higher prices. Needless to say, I devoured the entire loaf one small piece at a time during the 10 minute call, remembering what a licensed chef in Germany once told me. "Warm bakery in Europe means fresh while warmed goods in America means stale." How true that has been in my experience from coast to coast in patisseries, restaurants, and coffee shops from Maine to California. Americans have devolved in their epicurean standards and desensitized their palates, settling for the expensive artificial and processed instead of the remarkable friandise of authentic culinary artisanship. I learned why GBG is a unicorn among mules - the ingredients used by Chef Kevin are natural and organic! No twinkie-style chemicals to extend shelf life, artifical flavoring, or deceptively colorcoded dyes in the loaves, cookies and scones - just the best components from farm to oven, hand selected and combined by a baker who creates delightful confections for discriminating consumers. I cant imagine what he does when called upon to cater, but with 8 years of gourmet training at a major entertainment center on Canal Street, Chef Kevin has added.several years to hone his passion into pleasure. I cannot wait to return today just for a confirming second experience - another loaf and latte. The Chef is in at Green Baked Goods on South 5th Street and worth the amazingly affordable experience. When you visit, share your thoughts and poke a heart on this review. Encourage Kevin and his cafe, found a wee bit off the beaten path and give yourself, your partner, your friends, and family a delicious and delightful gift that you're sure to remember and want to share with others."

"The Best Place to Start the Milwaukee Experience! Great desserts (peach cobbler monkey bread, carrot cake, pistachio loaf) and an amazing panini. We ate the seers faster than we could get a photo. Excellent service, staff, and space. Street parking was easy."

"Food is really great but the service isnt always the fastest. They don't seem to know how to multitask or maybe overwhelmed at times, even when its slow. But it is worth the wait because it is tasty. My only other complaint is I was under the impression that is supposed to be a bakery but its more of a cafe. They are known for their bakery but they never have any and it always looks so empty when you go in. Seems like they do a good job with catering and I would hire them for that. I just think the cafe side is clear not their area of expertise but they do know how to cook so thats why I didn't go lower than 4 stars."
